ChatGPT and Shopify: In‑Chat Shopping is Coming – What We Know and Why It Matters

LinkedIn and the eComm world are buzzing about a new development: Shopify and OpenAI are poised to bring shopping right into the ChatGPT interface. While not officially announced yet, the evidence is there for all to see: Developers recently uncovered code in ChatGPT’s app that points to a built-in Shopify integration. Specifically, the code contained strings for actions like: - buy_now – a “Buy Now” button within ChatGPT, - price and shipping fields for products, and - a shopify_checkout_url field linking directly to Shopify’s checkout.
In other words, ChatGPT appears to be gearing up to let users browse and purchase Shopify store products without ever leaving the chat. We’re essentially looking at ChatGPT turning into a personalised shopping tool.
One snippet even shows an on-click event opening a Shopify checkout URL, indicating a hand-off straight to Shopify’s secure checkout page. This kind of native purchase flow implies a formal partnership between OpenAI and Shopify – not just an affiliate link or search result.
For consumers, the potential experience is game-changing. You could ask ChatGPT for, say, the “best trainers under £100,” see a curated list of products, and then hit “Buy” – all within the chat window. The purchase would complete inside ChatGPT, powered by Shopify’s high-converting checkout in the background.
Frictionless is the key goal here. It keeps the user engaged in one place, turning ChatGPT from a Q&A assistant into a one-stop shopping assistant. And for Shopify brands, this is huge: their products could gain exposure to ChatGPT’s massive user base (some estimates range up to nearly a billion users) without any additional integration work on the merchants’ part. What we don’t know - yet - is how custom data structures housed within metafields - for example - will be fed through to Chat GPT.
What we do know; is that our team of Technical experts are poised, ready to help merchants find out, and get their data in order.
If your store runs on Shopify, it might just show up in a ChatGPT conversation as a recommended option, ready to purchase. Instant distribution to a new audience, with zero extra effort – potentially.
Now, details on how exactly this in-chat shopping will look are still under wraps. OpenAI hasn’t published a press release or docs yet, so we don’t know the exact launch date or interface design. But the fact that these code elements are already live in ChatGPT’s code (across web and mobile) suggests the rollout could be imminent.
The bottom line is that conversational commerce is arriving, and Shopify is putting its merchants front and center in ChatGPT’s implementation.
Implications for brands are significant. If you’re already on Shopify, this upcoming integration could become an amazing new sales channel for you. Imagine being a part of the conversation whenever users ask for product recommendations – it’s like having a friendly AI salesperson who can instantly close the sale via Shopify. Could this nudge ChatGPT into becoming one of the most valuable eCommerce channels out there, given the convenience and scale of its user base?
On the flip side, if you’re on a legacy or non-Shopify e-commerce platform, you might be reading this and feeling a bit concerned. As a Shopify Partner Agency, we have to be frank: a ChatGPT-Shopify partnership means merchants on other platforms could be left out of a potential shopping revolution, at least temporarily. Shoppers won’t wait around for you to catch up – if they can get a zero-friction purchase from a Shopify-powered store via ChatGPT, that’s a big bonus for those brands already on Shopify. For brands still on Magento, WooCommerce, or other older systems, this could be a clear signal that now is the time to consider migrating to Shopify.
Of course, replatforming is a big decision – we get it. It’s not just about chasing the shiny new thing; it’s about setting your brand up for the future of commerce. At Say Yes, we’re all about marrying technical insight with commercial savvy. We’ve helped businesses with high-SKU, complex catalogues make the leap to Shopify before. (For instance, we migrated Powersheds – a leading UK shed retailer – to a modern Shopify Plus stack, handling their extensive product line and heavy data volumes without a hitch: Read the Case Study.)
We see the ChatGPT-Shopify development as an interesting opportunity for brands. It’s where cutting-edge AI meets ecommerce infrastructure - at scale. And it underscores why having a flexible, future-ready platform matters. At Say Yes, we’re here to help you adapt and say “yes” to what’s next.
If you’re considering moving to Shopify to take advantage of innovations like ChatGPT in-chat shopping, let’s talk.
